Our Story
Our Legacy of Compassion and Commitment
Sally Judd Griffin, Founder (1972)
In 1972, Sally Judd Griffin recognized a hidden crisis: homebound seniors across the Monterey Peninsula were suffering from malnutrition and isolation. What began with her personally cooking and delivering meals quickly became a movement.
Her compassion inspired others to join her, and just two years later, Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula was officially incorporated as a nonprofit.
EARLY MEALS
From Humble Beginnings to a Lasting Impact
Early meals were lovingly prepared in the basement of Carpenter’s Hall in New Monterey. As the demand for meals grew, so did the vision. In the early 1980s, the City of Pacific Grove donated land near Lovers Point, and under Sally’s leadership, a capital campaign raised over $1,000,000—starting with a $100,000 matching grant.
This incredible effort led to the creation of our home:
The Sally Griffin Senior Center — our “Jewel on Jewell.”

1980s–2020
After Sally’s retirement in the late 1980s, Viveca Lohr, then assistant executive director, stepped up to lead. Over the next 34 years, she guided the agency with dedication, expanding our services, staff, and impact. Her work helped shape MOWMP into a vital organization for seniors, disabled adults, and underserved populations on the Central Coast.
“Her unwavering commitment has greatly enhanced the social fabric of our community.”
Continuing the Mission
Viveca retired in 2020, but her heart remains with MOWMP.
“It has resulted in better nutrition and services for our local seniors, which was the vision of my mentor, Sally Judd Griffin,” she said.
She continues to be part of the MOWMP family, and her legacy lives on through every meal we serve and every life we touch.
Honoring the Past. Fueling the Future.
Today with President/CEO Christine Winge, we carry forward the mission inspired by Sally’s compassion and Viveca’s leadership—providing daily nourishment, meaningful connection, and independence to all who need us.
