If you have ever walked up to the Meals on Wheels Community Center and seen a man outside sweeping and raking, you might think he was a staff member of the center. He is not. Bill Hughes is our volunteer gardener who takes it upon himself Monday – Friday to make sure the outside of our building looks neat and tidy. But he also has another reason for being there.
During covid when the center was closed, everyone gathered in the garden after they received their to-go lunch. It gave everyone a chance to safely socialize and see their friends during a difficult time.
As people would walk up the sidewalks, many would comment on the items that would fall from our beautiful old eucalyptus tree, making the sidewalks messy and full of foliage. Come to find out it wasn’t only leaves that were making things messy but the “conical seed pods” that fall from the tree and at times make walking a little treacherous. After witnessing a few people tripping on them, he took it upon himself to start sweeping.
