Monterey County Gives! launches on November 13.

When a group of women got together over fifteen years ago to form a knitting group, who would have imagined that all these years later they are still intact.

Some people have moved away or stopped participating but Catherine Bazley, Gisela Nobinger, Ellie Waterman and Linda Wink are the steadfast knitters who come every third Tuesday of the month, get cozy in our library area, and knit away

Originally, there were some knitters in the group called “The Whatevers” associated with the Discovery Shop. They would receive various unfinished projects to finish and sell in the shop. At the MOW center, Diane Driver was the leader when Elly Waterman got involved. Linda Wink was already a member. The word got around about the group and more people joined. At their peak there were 12 members.

The Knitter’s Sale which will be held November 5 from 8:00am to 12:00pm is a yearlong project of items designated for the sale. What is even more miraculous about this event is not only has this group been giving their time and energy to produce fabulous items, but all the proceeds benefit MOWMP! It comesfull circle.

When asked what made the group decide to donate back to the center they shared that it began when cutbacks to funding affected Meals on Wheels pre-covid time. The group wanted to do their part, so they knit scarves and had a sale on Wednesdays, selling the scarves for $15.00 apiece. They raised $150.00 and donated it back to MOWMP. Then they thought, why stop at 10? They sold a lot more, and the rest is history! Their annual sale has become a tradition and in the last few years they have averaged about $2,000 each time. During covid, the group met at Caledonia Park until it got too cold, then they came and sat in our health and fitness center, since the center wasn’t having any classes.

This group has been able to keep going thanks to yarn donations when it is mentioned in the Gazette and word of mouth. We look forward to seeing this group on their Tuesday and appreciate the wonderful sale each November that showcases their great skills as knitters!
