Living in California’s “Salad Bowl,” our Produce Market Volunteers bring this agricultural region to life. With some members contributing for over a decade, they ensure our Front Porch Market Day runs smoothly every Wednesday morning.
Starting as early as 7:00 a.m., these dedicated volunteers tackle mountains of produce boxes, transforming the space into an inviting market.
Wicker baskets filled with fresh fruits and vegetables are neatly arranged with thoughtful signage, creating a warm and organized shopping experience.
Their contributions go beyond setup. Volunteers greet guests with smiles, manage the cashier station, and prepare bags for homebound clients and late pickups.
On average about 65-70 people come EACH WEEK to shop. We strive to have local organically grown items, but occasional have “fun” treats like pineapples, making Market Day a highlight for many.
After the market, the team breaks down boxes, tidies the room, and ensures leftover items are put to good use. Surplus produce goes to our kitchen for upcoming recipes, with anything extra placed on the free table, minimizing waste.
Market Day is also a hub for community connection. Announcements about upcoming events are shared, and vegetable humor—like the popular “Kale Yah”—keeps spirits high. Philip Tantillo, who oversees the market, writes a weekly recipe featuring a “vegetable of the week,” inspiring creative cooking.
As you pick the perfect lettuce, kale, cucumbers, or a pineapple, remember the team that makes it possible: Bonnie, Carissa, Claudia, Elaine, Greg, John, Leonard, Linda, Machi, Paul, Veronica and Yeh.
We are grateful and thank them for their hard work and dedication!
