People are often curious about how Meals on Wheels (MOW) programs operate in other states, but have you ever thought about MOW programs in other countries? If you were to search for MOW in Germany, you’d find at least two—one in Stuttgart and one in Munich—both operating much like ours.
This connection feels even more special because, since April 2024, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming a dedicated volunteer from Germany. Stephanie Schnitzler, from Murau, a Bavarian town of about 16,000 nestled between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, has been serving and baking with us.
Stephanie and her husband moved to the Monterey Peninsula when he enrolled at the Naval Postgraduate School. Wanting to contribute to her new community despite being here temporarily, she sought volunteer opportunities. She also hoped to connect with others and enhance her already impressive English skills.
Living in Pacific Grove, Stephanie often takes long walks. One day, she passed by the MOW Community Center and noticed our sign declaring, “BEST PLACE TO VOLUNTEER.” Intrigued, she looked us up online, liked what she saw, and applied right away.
Stephanie describes volunteering as a deeply fulfilling experience; “It means a lot to me. I am part of a whole team. I give something each day and get so much back. I’ve made friends, improved my English skills, and had a lot of fun. I feel respected, appreciated, and loved.”
For everyone at the MOW Community Center, saying goodbye to Stephanie in June will be incredibly difficult. She has not only been a wonderful addition to our volunteer team but has also taken great pride in learning about the services we provide and the people we serve.
When Stephanie returns to Germany, she will resume her career as a Medical Assistant. While she looks forward to being near her daughter, family, and friends, she knows she will miss the many wonderful people she met in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula.
We are so grateful that her walk led her past our doors, allowing us to spend time with such a remarkable person. We will enjoy every moment with her while we can.
